A motive is a reason for doing something. When we do something we have a reason to do it. When we do something we always have a purpose to do when we do. We have a goal to achieve.
Many people think that God is concerned with what we do only. It isn’t true. God is concerned about what we do and in why we do them.
Some of our motives are open and the others are hidden. Some of our motives may be pure and some of them are not so pure.
We may hide our motives from people but God knows all the motives. One may argue that isn’t my motive. But God knows the motive of people. God sees the motive of acting or reacting in a manner.
All a person's ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the LORD. Proverbs 16:2
God only rewards a pure motive, not a disguised one.
The most important Biblical practice can be done in a wrong motive that nullifies its rewards from God.
For instance, the Pharisees and Sadducees were giving alms in a movie of being seen by men as religious. Their motives were not to see the poor helped. Their motives are centered on themselves, not on the person they are helping.
That is why Jesus warned us not be unfruitful in our walk with God.
Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. Matthew 6:1
Jesus encourages us to purify our motives. Jesus talks about those who don’t search their hearts and purify their motives. He said that they receive their rewards on earth in fully. God only rewards those things that are done out of pure motives. It doesn’t really matter whether or not they are religious or not. There is nothing scary to receive all your rewards on earth working for God for years.
So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. Matthew 6:2
Let’s search our hearts. Let’s allow the word of God that searches our heart through and through.
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Hebrews 4:12-13
Not only God is concerned what we do he is also concerned why we do them.
A person may think their own ways are right, but the LORD weighs the heart. Proverbs 21:2
