Above all else, guard your heart

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23

The heart is the key to life. If the heart is broken, life is broken. A healthy heart leads to a healthy life.

But we humans often do not focus on the inner heart; rather, we see the outside appearance. God sees the heart.

But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him." 1 Samuel 16:7

As humans, we often worry, fight, and argue about appearances.

For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. Matthew 15:19

What we often want to adjust is our external speech. But if our lives are truly to be reformed, they must be reformed from the heart and from the inside out. A change that does not start from the heart is a false change.

"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. Matthew 23:25-28

This is why the Bible warns us about guarding our hearts.

We must give priority to our hearts' purity. We must guard our hearts with great diligence. We have to diligently guard our hearts from being polluted by "evil thoughts, murder, adultery, adultery, theft, false witness, and blasphemy". These evil thoughts really pollute our whole lives.

The loss of our precious gold and silver will not hurt us as much as our hearts' pollution by hatred and bitterness. The loss of our gold and silver does not affect our lives like the defilement of our hearts by selfishness or a lack of love.

It is much better for our gold and silver to be stolen than for our hearts to be defiled by evil thoughts. The theft of gold and silver does not harm us, like when our hearts are corrupted by evil thoughts.

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23
